Quick Home Remedies For Common Ailments

Home remedies are simple remedies used at home to cure minor ailments that may not need a visit to the doctor. They may be anything ranging from food, roots, to herbs and over-the-counter medications like paracetamol. Most of them are not synthetic medications, though. They have largely been used over many many years in households all over the world. Below are some of the most common and yet effective home remedies.

Home Remedies for Common Ailments

Home Remedy for Hiccups

Hiccups are the spasmodic involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. Sometimes they are funny but most times they are annoying and we just want to get rid of them. Typically they go away within minutes but sometimes they may persist for longer. Home remedies to get rid of them can be quite absurd but I recommend swallowing half a teaspoon of sugar and if that does notwork, try gargling with ice water for about a minute. That should take care of it. However, if your hiccups last for over two days, it is best to seek medical advice as it could be a sign of something more serious.

Home Remedies for Burns

Minor burns happen all the time in the kitchen. After suffering from a minor burn, the first thing to do is to place the burnt area under cold running water until the pain subsides. Then cut an aloe leaf lengthwise and apply directly to the burnt area. Minor in this case, is a burn that is less than 10 cm in diameter with the top skin still intact. If the area does not heal within 7 days, please make an appointment to see a doctor as sometimes home remedies may not be enough for more serious situations.

Common Cold

A common cold, as the name suggests is quite common. When one finally catches up with you, you want to be ready with one of the most popular home remedies of all time. A bowl of chicken soup with onions and garlic. This helps to slow the movement of neutrophils which are white blood cells that help fight infection in the body. This works to concentrate them in areas of the body that need the most healing.

With a common cold, often comes a sore throat and home remedies for this are countless but my personal favorite is half a cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with half a cup of sage tea. Add a teaspoon of sea salt and a pinch of cayenne and mix well. Gargle the mixture for 2 minutes and you will start to feel the difference in about 15 minutes. For an extra kick you can squeeze some lemon into the mixture.

Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection is bacterial and affects the urinary tract causing pain when peeing, among other symptoms. Home remedies for this are quite abundant but the easiest is having a glass of water. Plain and simple. Not just one though, several. Drink up in general but avoid anything fizzy, caffeinated or alcoholic. This helps to flush out the bacteria that is causing the infection. The more you drink the more you have to empty your bladder and the more bacteria you flush out. Easy math. Also, laying off hot spicy foods will help to reduce the inflammation.

Lastly, at the end of the day when you just cannot fall asleep and you are battling with insomnia, have a glass of tart cranberry juice. This contains melatonin which is the hormone that helps to regulate sleep patterns. After the drink, take a warm bath to relax your muscles and that will be your ticket to slumber land.
